WTF Wednesday – Miami Face-Eater Not on Bath Salts

Weird New Wednesday

Tests in cannibalism case: Zombie-like attacker used pot, not ‘bath salts’

CNN:

Rudy Eugene, 31, was killed by a police officer after Eugene’s 18-minute attack on a homeless man. His body didn’t show “any other street drugs, alcohol or prescription drugs, or any adulterants found in street drugs,” according to the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner Department.

“The department has also sought the assistance of an outside forensic toxicology reference laboratory, which has confirmed the absence of ‘bath salts,’ synthetic marijuana and LSD,” the statement said.

The media talked about bath salts with such authority I thought there was evidence or something. Mainstream media fail.

Oh god, Time Magazine is now calling him the “Cannabis Cannibal.”  I’m guessing schizophrenia on this one, maybe made worse by the pot. One of the really rare cases that make you violent.

What’s more bizarre to me is, how did the homeless guy let someone gnaw on his face for so long? They released pictures of the victim and the damage is pretty intense. Even if you’re really, drunk adrenaline should kick in and make your life-or-death mechanism kick in.

Men are NOT Raped More than Women in the US

[2013 edit: I realize that this post isn’t as clear in re: statistical analysis as I would like it to be. I doubt the premise will change, but I will do a more thorough data combing in a later post and link to it here in a edit when I do.]

[2016 edit: Here you go. “Men are NOT Raped More than Women in the US pt 2“]

Since I’ve been criticizing people that shit-talk men in my Cosmo post and my defense of DSK. I feel like I have to prove my gender egalitarianism now.

Progressive Current TV newscasters The Young Turks were straight up wrong about something last week. They called it a “fact.” I sent them an e-mail, but they never responded, so in my truth-crusading the need to bitch on my blog kicked in.

Dear Young Turks,

I’m writing in regards to your video “Men Raped More Than Women in US?” To your eponymous question, Cenk answered “yes” to men are raped more than women. This notion is simply wrong.

Cenk didn’t cite a statistic in the video, (which he should, if only to pass off blame in case the source is wrong) but the video comments cites Justice Department guidelines (but has no link).

You need to learn how to read and interpret primary sources before passing them off to your anchors as facts. Just because there are more men in prison than women, and there are prison rape epidemics, it does not immediately statistically necessitate that men are raped more than women.

Here is an excellent blog post from Feministe, which cites the Justice Dept. survey about prison sexual assault released in 2012:

The Justice Department survey is linked here. And… yeah. Those numbers are not quite correct, but they are nonetheless horrifying. First of all, “sexual assault” is not always the same as “rape,” and includes a variety of behavior that wouldn’t meet the legal standard for rape. So it’s not clear that there are actually more rapes of men than women, or more rapes of prisoners than non-prisoners…

According to RAINN, there are 213,000 victims of sexual assault in the United States every year.More than 9/10ths of those victims are women and girls. The numbers RAINN uses come from the Department of Justice National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). The NCVS, though, is clear that its methodology for gathering sexual assault stats is pretty limited, and probably doesn’t present a 100% accurate picture of what victims experience. The NCVS also doesn’t seem to include prisoners (at least as far as I can tell), but would include people who were sexually assaulted in prison within the past year, but were out of prison at the time the NCVS was taken.

You had better be careful in the future with your fact-checking or risk alienating your women viewers.

People on youtube tried to be all snarky and present other studies with incompatible sampling techniques to prove the amount of men that underreport rape make up the difference. They failed and then I got downvoted for simply citing statistics from the same studies they were supposedly getting their information from.

One such study is the The National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey on the CDC website, which still says, “Nearly 1 in 5 women (18.3%) and 1 in 71 men (1.4%) in the United States have been raped at some time in their lives.”

Including stalking and other forms of violence bring the stats up to “More than 1 in 3 women (35.6%) and more than 1 in 4 men (28.5%) in the United States.” I still think it’s a good idea to include different forms of sexual violence, but if they broaden the definition too wide, example “stalking,” the statistics are going to include a bunch of unrelated experiences.

Prison rape is still a problem. Male and female rape are still problems. But we need to have honest conversations about the data and where it’s coming from if we’re going to fix it.

Louis CK Fights Scalper Ticket Price Inflation

(Louie Season 3 comes back June 28 on 10:30 PM on FX.)

Since his $5 Paypal Beacon Live stint, Louis CK has been getting a reputation for being a bleeding liberal, making the funny affordable for the people, and working against monopolies. He deserves it. This is great work, setting up newer comedy consumption models that make capitalism work in the ways it’s supposed to work.

Louis CK is so popular that apparently whenever he has a cheap show, scalpers buy a shitload of his tickets and then jack up the price.

I just got an e-mail from him:

By selling the tickets exclusively on my site, I’ve cut the
ticket charges way down and absorbed them into the ticket price.
To buy a ticket, you join NOTHING.  Just use your credit card and
buy the damn thing.  opt in to the email list if you want, and
you’ll only get emails from me.

Also, you’ll see that if you try to sell the ticket anywhere for
anything above the original price, we have the right to cancel
your ticket (and refund your money).  this is something I intend
to enforce.  There are some other rules you may find annoying but
they are meant to prevent someone who has no intention of seeing
the show from buying the ticket and just flipping it for twice
the price from a thousand miles away.

Some of these rules may be a pain in your ass, but please be
patient.  My goal here is that people coming to see my shows are
able to pay a fair price and that they be paying just for a
ticket.  Not also paying an exhorbanant fee for the privalege of
buying a ticket.

Tickets across the board, everywhere, are 45 dollars.  That’s
what you’ll actually pay.  In every case, that will be less than
anyone has actually  paid to see me (after ticket charges)  in
about two years and in most cases it’s about half of what you
paid last year.

The benifit for me is that I won’t get angry emails from anyone
who paid a ton of money to see me due to circumstances out of my
control.  That makes me VERY happy.  The 45 dollars also includes
sales tax, which I’m paying for you.

I love this guy.  So much.  Maybe I’ll actually be able to afford a show one day soon.

SCOTUS Predictions for the Health Care Bill

[6/28 Edit:  Those 19 constitutional scholars were wrong about the Court.  Reax on my blog “Holy Shit Mandate” here.]

Sarah Kliff of Ezra Klein’s Wonkblog does some of the tightest health care news blogging I’ve ever seen.

Kliff on the SCOTUS individual mandate decision:

Bloomberg surveyed 21 top constitutional scholars and found that, while 19 think the individual mandate of the Affordable Care Act ought to be upheld on the basis of legal precedent, just eight think the Supreme Court will actually do so.

Sigh. Yup, pretty much. Kennedy is supposed to be the swing Judge, the new Sandra Day O’Connor, but he really does bend conservative. It’ll probably turn out to be a 5-4 ruling against the mandate. There’s hope though, according to Kliff.

The other thing they are ruling on, but people are talking about less, is the proposed Medicaid expansions. States are arguing that it puts excessive burden on them and suing. Suck it, Red states. Eat your own Christian values, and help your poor people have basic human dignity.

I think, hopefully, a lot of the bill should remain intact. Otherwise everyone with a college kid under 26 is going to be pissed.

Domtar (Big Paper) Releases Ads that Reek of Desperation

Here is an attempt at viral marketing that pushes against paperless. I never knew paper companies felt so threatened by iPads.

I’ve never heard of them, but apparently Domtar is the largest manufacturer of uncoated sheet paper in North America.

http://www.paperbecause.com/

Bullet points from Big Paper include:

> Opening a nice envelope is surprisingly exciting.

> The mail carrier is getting a little pudgy.

>Underneath all our wireless streaming, hands-free technology, we’re still people.

Paper is PERSONAL!  Paper is PURPOSEFUL! Paper is KNOWLEDGE!

Guys, this is a call to action. Our love of opening envelopes is in a precarious position. If we let Clouds overtake our planners, our humanity will fall like Domtar’s stock prices. Our children will descend into the chaos of ADHD. Our corporate ideals will be ripped like babies from their mothers’ breasts, and freedom will be eaten by the fascism of inefficiency.

Thank you, Domtar, for opening my eyes to the dangers of digital; you should make an app for this.
